Day 19 of the Jam Unacceptable Campaign (Our Final Day!)

Our Jam Unacceptable campaign is over, and what better image to encapsulate the messages we’ve been trying to convey than the four red circles sign.

The signs were devised by the Downtown Victoria Business Association, which is the organized political voice of downtown property owners. The signs empower police and private security to move people along from infront of private property when owners are not there. In other words, as far as people who are street-involved are concerned, every business with a sign operates its exclusion 24/7/365.

This is how people with more than enough privilege like to ‘serve’ people who have none of it.

We hope this campaign has provided some perspective for how deep the problem of homelessness runs in Victoria. Stigma, marginalization and criminalization are responses to poverty devised by people who wish to consolidate their privilege.

This is unacceptable, and it won’t change without struggle.
